I thought about making a list of the top 10 reasons WHY this blog post has been so long in coming, but really, who wants to read a bunch of excuses? Instead, I'll tell you what's been going on in VIP-land since our last update...
1.) We performed at Asbury! - and it was pretty fabulous. To help kick off the Memory Walk, we sang the national anthem and God Bless America and the Disney set from of our Broadway show. It's always interesting to perform when there's a dancing mascot! Yes, there was -- along with a DJ and several hundred folks gathered together to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer's. We enjoyed the performance, and hope to post some pictures from it soon.
2.) After the performance, I hopped in the car for a weekend in Philly. In between Dave Matthews concerts, I had a lovely lunch with Ashley C. (VIP '06) and dinner with Iain (VIP '06), Emily A. (VIP '07) and Elena (VIP '26). Fun to hang out with these former (and future) VIPs!
3.) We've had two more rehearsals, full of some pretty exceptional moments. One of my favorites -- in HS VIP, we're singing a wonderful piece that has a 3-part men's section. And our 7 guys nailed it in just one rehearsal. That really takes a level of musicianship that's head and shoulders above your typical youth choir. In fact, all of VIP really is performing "up a notch" right now. The 23 singers in middle school (yes, 23!) are doing music that, at a different point in time, full VIP might have done. It's awesome to see the singers conquering new musical territory -- and loving every minute of it.
4.) This year, I am incorporating choreography into warm-ups. Yes, it's a little silly but it entertains me. Ha! Oh - and it has some educational value, too. It helps VIP to physically relax before they sing. It introduces them to moves that will be part of our next choreographed show (in 2011!). They learn to follow their conductor and respond to instructions. Finally, it helps them to learn to think, act, and move like a unit. The singers learn quickly to self-correct when they're moving in the wrong direction or they're out of sync with the larger group... if they can hold onto that skill (physically and metaphorically), the individual singers and VIP will be in very good shape.
Welcome! Voices In Praise exists for the glory of God and in service to others. As the youth choir of Friendship United Methodist Church, the group is open to all youth in grades 6 -12 who have a desire to sing and a willingness to make the commitment to the group. Singers are not required to be a member of the church or to have any background in singing. Our doors are open to everyone!
New singers are welcome any time. Feel free to contact Director Holly Reynolds Lee at 301-728-1748 with questions!

Rally Success!
There are not enough adjectives in the world to describe the awesomeness that was the VIP Rally, so instead I'm going to make a list of the Top 10 things that thrilled me about tonight:
10.) We welcomed a fantastic group of rookies: Michael, Ashley, Jamie, Mackenzie, Dacey, Chad, Tony, and Joe. (I pray I didn't forget anyone!)
9.) Mary Brooke had a connector just when we needed it.
8.) Brie is a walking treasure trove of bizarre music trivia knowledge.
7.) The basses are (seriously) a wall of macho man sound with the personalities to match.
6.) Jimbo reads the tenor line and makes it gorgeous. And Robbie F. really will sing the high C, even though he wants to (and can) sing the low one.
5.) Devotional - especially from Adam and several others.
4.) There's no freaking out when I announce that we have a performance on Saturday.
3.) We have high school altos! And they're LOVELY. (We could still use a few more!) And the front-row altos, Brenna, Ellie, and Lauren, were right-on, super-strong stunning.
2.) Not a single solitary person expressed disappointment at the Choir Tour choice, even my Puerto Rican rooting girls.
1.) My friend Jeff is back.
Life doesn't get any better than this! Thanks, VIP! It's going to be a great year.

Come and Be Joyful! A Rally Preview...
Wondering what to expect tonight at the VIP Rally? Here's a sneak preview...
1.) Arrival at 6:30pm - you'll be asked to put on a name tag. Yes, it's dorky. Yes, we all do it anyway. You'll be asked to fill out a contact form so we know a little more about you!
2.) Games - you know how there are some we have a reputation for cheesy, goofy, games. We take pride in this silliness! After all, we're a choir with a history of hackey sacking; intense games of "Mother, May I"; airport Twister; CatchPhrase; and lots of soccer.
3.) Ice Cream Sundae Bar! And we'll have lemonade slushies and popsicles for non-ice cream, people.
4.) Singing.... yay! We have a fantastic line-up of music this year. More about what we're singing later in the week.
5.) Closing Devotional and Prayer... VIP has a special way of doing this that we'll show you tonight.
If you need a ride, directions, or anything else before tonight's rally -- feel free to contact me (Holly) at 301-728-1748.
See you tonight at 630pm!

Monday can't come soon enough...
I'm so glad that we have just 2 days left till we kick off the 2009-2010 Choir Year!
Yes, yes, I've been working through a list of things-you-have-to-do-before-your-choir comes. I've reviewed new music and ordered the pieces that I like (side note: there is a TON of bad, bad, bad choral music out there). I've marked the pieces I like with all sorts of notes, including one that says "Use this to announce Choir Tour 2012." Haha! I even bought a special book where I will faithfully record attendance...or try to!
But all this is just the prep work to the good stuff that starts when the VIPs walk through the door. It's hard to describe but there's this sort of electrical buzz in the air as they mix and mingle, and meet new people. As I watch the kids goof around through their opening games, I catch myself wondering -- who's going to step up and be a leader? Who's going to shock the world with a voice no one knew they had? Who's going to come in here and really make an impact on the world through VIP?
And then I usually get smacked with a soccer ball or flying shoe, and I realize that I'll get my answers in time. For tonight, we have fun, we meet new people, and finally (after a summer break that feels just a little too long to this director) -- we SING.

Postcards and Prayer
With less than 2 weeks till VIP kicks off the 2009-2010 choir year, I'm happy to tell you that postcards were mailed to all current and many prospective members! We have plenty of postcards left, so if you want one to give to a friend, just contact Holly or Bonnie Dean.
When I look at the stack of postcards, just waiting to hit the mailbox, I always wonder about the people who will read them. Somebody (probably Chad) is going to get it and jump for joy that he FINALLY is invited to VIP. {I think Chad has been ready to join VIP for about 5 years now -- and now that he's in the 6th grade, we're glad to welcome him in!}
Other postcards will land in the hands of kids who don't give a hoot about VIP and aren't the least bit interested, but I hope that (at some level) they'll be glad to have been invited.
And then, there's a whole other group of kids who have received a postcard year after year but never tried VIP. This year, they will get the postcard and instead of tossing it, they'll hang onto it for a minute and think about joining the choir. And someone (their Mom or a friend in the choir) will say, "You know, you really should give VIP a try."
As I look at this year's junior and senior classes, I have to shake my head at the number of VIPs who sat on the sidelines and watched VIP for years before they actually joined. They've become some of VIP's strongest singers, greatest leaders, and all-around choir champions.
While we sometimes joke about how long it took for Kate, Kerry, Dylan, Tara and others to become part of VIP, I know that God has a plan for each of them and for VIP, and that he leads all of us in his way and at his time. God's planning and timing are perfect -- we just have to be faithful enough to follow it! Sometimes that means people join VIP in 6th grade with the first postcard and other times, they receive postcards year after year before something changes within them and they give VIP a try. And other times, folks never join VIP but this is ok, too. After all, don't you think that God may be using them in a different way for a different mission? Yep!
As the stack of postcards hits the mail, I pray that God would be at work in the lives of the people who receive them. I pray that he will move the hearts of people that he wants in VIP and lead them to our choir. And finally, I pray that God will help VIP and supply it with the singers it needs to be successful in ministry.
